Tuesday
Two days out and the fresh water tank is below half. We reload water, ice and Coca Cola at Lighthouse
Reef Resort for US$20! Its another slow
broad reach down the lee side of Lighthouse Reef to Halfmoon Cay. As we approach the channel off Long Cay, the drag
on the fishing poles starts popping.
Fish on! Fish on! Everybody
lands at least one barracuda.
Dinner? Nope. Read on.
Kyle, Denise and Claudio dive 85 feet down the wall outside the reef
south of Halfmoon Cay. Elias takes Jean and I
snorkeling the numerous coral heads on the atoll. When
we return to the dinghy, Elias has a surprise. He
opens the anchor locker to show our first lobster. Claudio,
Kyle and Denise have now moved the boat inside the reef.
Elias drops us at the boat, then chases Claudio, who fills the locker with
lobster and the boat with conch.
We moor at the dock on Halfmoon Cay.
Elias takes us to the bird sanctuary. Hermit
crabs run across the path. Kyle finds a snake
and Elias sees a four foot iguana. Neither
mention it to the girls until we return to the boat.
We climb a ladder to a platform
at the top of the trees. Hundreds of
red-footed booby birds and frigate birds are nesting in the trees. A few noisy fights over particular branches. Now dark, we dodge crabs in our bare feet. Returning to the boat, ceviche on the table and
Claudio is cooking lobster on coconut palm leaves on shore.
That evening, Denise and I make bread and even Claudio plays
Uno.
