Belize P 5

Thursday

A little too much wind overnight has us rocking.  Denise is sick and I am queasy.  We move to the lee side of Long Cay.  Lobster and eggs for breakfast with fresh Italian herb bread.  Claudio and Elias go fishing for conch and crab, but this shallower area is well picked by the local fisherman.  The wall off Long Cay has more great diving.

Sailing, fishing, snorkeling, lobster and conch, another dive off Long Cay.  Ho Hum…Another day in paradise that doesn’t suck.  A broad reach to Turneffe puts us into Harry Jones Point after dark.  Lobster again? You bet!  We won’t get any more now that we left Lighthouse Reef.

Friday

A cold front has settled in ruining the opportunity to perfect the tan.  We get a decent close hauled run up Southern Lagoon to the Northern Bogue, then motor straight upwind in a narrow passage past Cockroach Cay, Pelican Cay and Dog Flea Cay, around Rendezvous Point to the Turneffe wall for a final dive.  All the soda and juice are gone.  It’s beer or water.

I tell Kyle he needs to catch a fish for lunch, or I’ll have to dig in the freezer.  He comes back with two snapper, which go from water to a frying pan in minutes and mixed with Curry Rice, isn’t quite this good at home.  While I finish lunch, Claudio and Jean take a short dive.  I’m still nursing my ears from yesterday.

Another slow broad reach.  Six knots becomes five, then four, then three.  Meanwhile the swells grow from three feet to six feet.  I give up and start the engines.  Maybe we should have had water instead of beer for lunch.  More porpoises distract us from the swells.  Jean and Denise are sleeping in the net while we ride up and down the swells.  “Don’t open your eyes,” Jean says.  “Too late, I already did,” Denise responds as they stare at a wall of water when we ride down the front of a swell.

Back in South Pass, we tie to the pier at Cay Caulker.  The girls get ice and soda so we enjoy cocktails and left over ceviche.  While San Pedro is more Caribbean than Central American, then Cay Caulker is the Key West of Belize.  We take Claudio and Elias to Sand Box Bar for dinner.  Still, no one has the energy to go out after dinner.  Air Conditioning and Uno instead.
