Belize P1

Saturday

This was my first trip since 9/11.  O'Hare was not too crowded, although there were long lines for domestic coach check in. Thanks for getting us into 1st Class, Jean and June.  Security checked my bag thoroughly. Too many electronic gadgets!  By the time we met Kyle & Denise at DFW, the girls were half in the bag.  By the time we reached Belize City, they were all the way.tropic.jpg (76760 bytes)

Thirteen seats on the plane to San Pedro.  San Pedro is the largest town on the cays (pronounced keys, Denise).  It is on Ambergris Cay, named for the amber greasy substance secreted by whales.  TMM base is less than a block from the “airport”. We hiked it rather than the taxi.  Next time, walk down and get the cart.  After settling on our boat, Muddy Joe, we had a nice dinner at Elvi’s Kitchen.  It’s Saturday night, but the girls were not ready for the disco.  We did stop at B.C.’s bar for a few.  However, “Yes, We Have No Bananas” seemed to be the song of the bars in Belize.  That night, I discovered my checkbook missing.  Kyle called American earlier looking for his camera, which they said they could not find, but they did find a checkbook.

Sunday

The most unfriendly unhelpful people in Belize turned out to be the American Airlines ground crew.  TMM spent the entire morning trying to get my check book and finally succeeded with the help of the manager at Tropic Air.  Kyle and I found a good breakfast at Mickey’s.  TMM was very confused about our provisioning, thinking that food for four would not be enough for the four of us plus the captain.  We had great BBQ at B.C.’s before we finally got the check book, paid the bill and got underway about 2PM.

We only had time for a snorkel ‘out front’ at San Pedro then a slow sail to Cay Caulker.  The snorkel was great.  Not much of a reef, but we saw several nurse sharks and a few rays.

Cay Caulker is the end of civilization on the barrier reef.  Still, no one was interested in going to shore so quickly in our adventure.  Still full from lunch, we made supper of salad and bread, then played Uno.
